Welcome…

Today is a great day for you.

Think about it. At some point you awoke, you breathed in your consciousness and opened your eyes. You were alive – still. Surely that in itself is cause for celebration and rejoicing. The miracle of breath - another reason for feeling good – with life giving air flowing through your nostrils and into your lungs; reflect on this for a moment and recognise the wonder of you. Sight – another miracle; Light rays bent by the lens of your eye, stimulating cells on your retina, travelling as electro-chemical signals to the back of your brain where your brain somehow manages to make sense of it all and you see your room, the light, and if you are lucky the sunshine. In the space of a few moments many miracles took place, many wonders, as you awoke this morning.

I wonder if you noticed?

I wonder if you took time to reflect upon the miracle of you and the miracle of light. I wonder if you immediately filled your mind with the busy-ness of the day and what needed doing and how little time there was, and how you were going to cope with all the tasks you had to accomplish, and what you were going to have for breakfast, and what you were going to have for tea, and what you were going to watch on TV. I wonder if your mind was almost immediately filled with the anxiety of a problem that you can find no solution to and no release from. I wonder if you opened the curtains and gave thanks for the miracle of sunlight. I wonder, if you are fortunate enough to look out onto a garden or some greenspace, if you reflected for just a moment on the beauty and the miracle of growth and flower and fruit.

I wonder!

In the first few moments of consciousness this day you experienced many wondrous events, this is why I say to you today is a great day for you. Did any other miracles happen? Did you hear anything, touch anything, taste anything, or have an intuitive feeling about anything? Did you notice? Are you even aware of the texture of what you touch with your hand, or its temperature… I bet you are now!

You are asleep all day. You notice everything that is unimportant and nothing that is.

My challenge is a gentle one for I truly know that you notice what you notice and find important what you find important. My intention, as always, is to assist you in freeing yourself from the chains that bind you. One of the biggest blocks to freedom and peace is inattention. Failure to appreciate beauty and wonder in the little everyday things around you leads to a mundane existence. Learning to notice, to take a second or two out of your busy schedule to appreciate a leaf, a flower, a sunbeam, a raindrop, a word, a mind…will enhance your life immeasurably.

But of course you are far too busy for that, if you stopped to enjoy a blade of grass for a moment on your way to the car you’d be late for work and if you did that every day then very soon you’d have no job. So don’t bother with the grass and appreciate the redness of the traffic light that you have no choice but to wait at. Appreciate the simplicity of the design of road signs that communicate so much so quickly and simply. Appreciate the courtesy you are shown when someone lets you into a queue. There is no moment in your life when there is no thing to appreciate – no matter what seems to be going on around you.

Today is a great day for you – so enjoy it.

With Love,
Himal
